Juneau Food Tours is a culinary walking tour with six tasting locations. This means each location has small samples, or tastings, of the food available at that location. The tour includes restaurants as well as gourmet food stores, so that visitors are treated to great food and the opportunity to take some home.

Tracy at Crab ShackTypically guests don’t have time to shop for the tasty goodies at retail locations. However Juneau Food Tours has ensured ample time to purchase that smoked salmon for your special cousin or some wonderful cheeses to have with your favorite wine when you get back home.

For the next few weeks our blog will share information about our tasting locations to whet your appetite on what to expect when you experience a Juneau food tour. We like to say it’s a tour with taste because it’s real Alaskan food by real Alaskans.

Tracy LaBarge, owner of Tracy’s King Crab Shack, started her world-famous business ten years ago.  The shack is located on the docks in downtown Juneau and features succulent king crab legs and other delicacies including her award-winning king crab bisque. Tracy is admired for her tenacity as a business owner, as well as her culinary creations. When asked if she would ever expand to a full service restaurant she tended to reply, “I just want to own a shack.”

This held true until last year when the shack relocated and more than doubled in size. Tracy is also owner of three additional eateries in Juneau; SALT, a high-end sophisticated restaurant featuring steaks and seafood; Saffron, a delightful Indian

restaurant; and McGivney’s Sports Bar & Grill, a gastropub where you will find many a local cheering on their favorite teams.

Perhaps creating a dining empire wasn’t exactly Tracy’s vision, but we in Juneau are delighted that she ventured on to have more than a shack. We were also excited to learn that a limited menu is available throughout the winter months in the crab shack’s retail store.

Our tasting at Tracy’s includes her wildly popular king crab bisque, a house-made crab cake, and the garlicy butter dinner rolls.  It’s a perfect start to a delicious dining experience.
