One thing visitors may notice when coming to Juneau is a particular brown rubber boot that many Southeast Alaskans wear on a daily basis. The boots are called Xtratufs® and they are about as common in this part of the world as a salmon swimming upstream. Jason Puckett, owner of JCP Confections, is a local fellow who has taken this iconic symbol to a whole new level. He specializes in gourmet marshmallow candies. Jason put his considerable confectionery skills to use and created a must have treat – the Xtrafluf™. It is a boot-shaped chocolate covered marshmallow that is light, fluffy, and absolutely delicious.
Jason has been making candy as a hobby for his friends and family for about ten years. He moved to Juneau and created the Xtrafluf™ as a humorous idea to represent Southeast Alaska. It was a serendipitous moment when Midgi and Jason happen to meet in a hallway as she was leaving a breakfast meeting. He shared with her his idea of chocolate covered marshmallows and brought her some samples. Needless to say it was a match made in confectionery heaven.
Each guest receives one of these delicious boots in his or her gift bag. The question is: do you eat it because it’s so good, or do you save it because it’s so cute? It’s a tough decision for certain.
Juneau Food Tours is proud to share this local treat with our guests. It’s the perfect addition to a culinary tour. As always, real Alaskan food, by real Alaskans.
